Check the four basic skills before starting to learn…

I’m pretty sure that you are working your English with no planning at all. I did the same in the past.

Of course you are still learning something but I can assure you that you are not improving as much as you could. It’s like trying to walk to a specific location blindfolded. You can still reach the place but it’s going to take you a lot more time and effort.

Moreover I bet that most of you sometimes fell lost and doubt if your English learning process is following the best direction.

Here is what you have to do in the very first place before starting to work your English:

An Easy Strategy To Improve Your English In The Right Direction

Check the four basic skills before starting to learn and improve your English

You know that you have four basics skills to work on:

  • LISTENING
  • SPEAKING
  • WRITING
  • READING

Then you have to ask you two questions:

  1. What is your current level for each one of those skills?
  2. How are you going to prioritize and distribute your time and effort among those 4 skills?

If you take the time to think, answer and write down these questions, you can be reassured that you are taking a better approach to improve your English in a faster and easiest way.

I Share With You My Current Personal Strategy

1. What are my current levels for each one of those skills?

SKILL

MY CURRENT LEVEL

LISTENING

Good

READING

Good

SPEAKING

Bad

WRITING

Regular

2. How am I going to prioritize and distribute my time and effort among those 4 skills?

It’s easy to see that where I have to work hard is on my speaking skill. Moreover in my work I need to speak English from time to time and I don’t feel at ease. I want to prioritize the work on my Speaking skill.

I also think that besides from speaking a lot I also need to work on my Listening skill. I have a better level but it’s basic to master it because speaking and listening go together in a conversation.

3. Then I decide to distribute my time and effort like this:

SKILL

MY CURRENT LEVEL

LISTENING

30%

READING

5%

SPEAKING

60%

WRITING

5%

I use most of my free time speaking with some partners through Skype. (In future posts I’m going to share more information about that).
I also work my listening watching TV shows and especially Stand-up comedy.

If you don’t know what Stand-up comedy is: It’s one comic speaking in front of a live audience. It’s 100% talking and close shots to the speaker what helps a lot to improve. I specially like Comedy Central Presents.
It’s a show where there is a lot of different comedians with a lot of different English accents.

In the other hand my Reading and Writing are for some time in the background.

The best material to improve your listening skill faster

It’s very important to improve your listening skill. In a conversation, even before being able to speak you have to be able to understand what someone says to you.
Then you have to work your listening but I guess that…

  • You are looking for a pleasant way to work your listening.
  • You want to keep doing it until you reach a good level of understanding.

Then how can you do it?

The Best Material To Improve Your Listening…

the best material to improve your english listening skill faster
In my own experience, after working with a lot of different materials, I think that the best ones are TV SHOWS and even more specifically:

SITCOMS and SOAP OPERAS

Why specifically these and not others?
I strongly recommend you to watch this very specific kind of TV shows because:

  1. In this kind of shows there is always a lot of talking that’s just what we are looking for.
  2. It’s always the same characters and one episode after another you know them better. Then it’s easier for you to follow the plot and to understand the dialogues.
  3. It’s easier to understand and concentrate on the dialogues because usually there is no outdoor noises.
  4. Most of the time you can watch the characters in close shots and see how they move their mouths while talking what is quite useful.
  5. It’s easier to get caught on the plot. Then you are going to create the habit to watch the show as often as possible.

Three Basic Steps That I Recommend You To Follow…

1.Choose a TV Show that you really like.

2.Be patient because the first episodes are the hardest ones to follow. After every new episode you watch it’s going to be easier for you to follow the plot and to understand the characters talking. If after some episodes you still don’t like the show, give it up and go for another one that suits you best.

3.Create the habit to watch a show as often as possible. (One episode per day would be perfect). If you keep doing this for a long time your listening skill is going to improve a lot without even noticing it.
