The first question to ask before starting to learn…

I bet that sometimes you feel like you are not learning English as much as you want.
Or maybe you are working a lot but feel that your English level is not improving a lot.
I felt like this many times in the past until I STOP and ask me this very simple question…

Why Do You Want To Improve Your English?

The first question to ask before starting to learn English

If you know the answer or answers to this easy question, you are going to improve faster because…

  • You can adapt your learning strategy to your own needs.
  • You are going to work through stuff that you really like.
  • You are going to fuel your motivation.

Think about all this for a moment and then write down your personal reasons to learn and improve your English. Your answers are very important.

As An Example I Show You My Own Answers…

On day, after being bored to work my English with any direction at all, going from one method to another I stopped and asked me:

Why do I really want to improve my English?

Here are my answers…

  • Because I like how English sounds.
  • Because I like Pop-Rock music and English is the language of  the best songs.
  • Because most of the best materials you can find on the Internet are in English.
  • Because I like TV Shows and I like to watch them in their original version.
  • Because I want to find a better job in the future and to master English is a must.
  • Because I like to meet people from abroad and English is the international language.

Being conscious of the reasons that moved me to learn English in the first place is helping me to:

  • Be more motivated.
  • Know how I have to work my English.
  • Work my English in a more pleasant way.

Instead of working my English with books, methods or exercises about topics that I don’t like at all, I prefer to work my English through stuff or topics that I really like.

How to use your answers and adapt them to your English learning strategy

Here I show you some examples on how to transform what you like and what you need into a good and pleasant strategy…

I want to improve my English because I like English songs then…

  • I learn and memorize songs.
  • I sing songs.
  • I chat with people who like the same artists/bands.
  • I read about my favorite bands or artists.
  • I write and share in forums and groups about my favorites bands.

I want to improve my English because I look for a better job then…

  • I read materials about my work camp.
  • I improve my training /education through English materials/schools/courses…

I want to improve my English because I like some topics that are only available in English in the internet then…

  • I search and read about my favorite topics in English.
  • I write about my favorite topics in forums, groups.
  • I chat with people with whom we share the same interests.

I want to improve my English because I’m looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend from abroad then…

  • I chat with people.
  • I look for new friends and email them.

Following these examples (among many others) you are going to learn and improve your English in a way that motivates you.

The most valuable thing to improve your English speaking…

For English learners that aren’t living in an English speaking country, Speaking is not easy to improve.
Because of that I bet that like me you think that Speaking is maybe the most difficult skill to learn.
To improve, we need to speak in a regular basis and it’s hard to find situations where you can practice your English speaking.

Then it’s when we really need something…

the most valuable thing to improve your English speaking level

Someone You Need To Improve Your Speaking

If you can’t go to live in an English speaking country for some time, then what you need is…wait for it…

A REGULAR PARTNER

A regular partner is someone with whom you are going to improve your speaking level.
In my personal experience it’s not easy to find the right partner because:

-You don’t know where to find it.
-When you find someone you don’t have anything in common.
– When you finally find someone nice, the partner doesn’t show any more after some meetings or maybe it’s you that give up.

Then how can you find a suitable partner?  What do you have to check?

The Four Characteristics Of A Good Partner

  1. Level
  2. Things in common
  3. Goals
  4. Availability

1) Level

We all want a native speaker to help us to improve our speaking. Sometimes when your speaking level is very basic is not easy to maintain a conversation and then it’s impossible to keep our native partner interested.
Then it’s not a bad idea to work with a non native speaker like us.
Whenever possible someone with a better level than you is going to be a good motivation and a good teacher too.
Someone as motivated as you to improve his/her speaking is also a very good choice.

2) Things in common

It’s not only just about speaking, it’s about enjoying the process of learning. If you share things in common with your partner (Topics, Hobbies…) it’s going to be easier. You are going to share common interest and then the partnership is going to last for long.
Sharing common interest = Long-lasting partner = Improve your speaking faster

3) Goals

Have in mind your goals:
-Reach a good speaking level soon?
-Enjoying a friendship and by the way improve a little your speaking?

You have to know your goals and the ones of your partner.
You maybe need a partner as motivated as yourself to meet almost every day. Or maybe you just need a friend to meet every now and then without any hurry?
It’s important to share with your partner the same objectives.

4) Availability

Be aware of your availability and the one of your partner. You need a long term friendship to improve your speaking and if you can’t meet on a regular basis then you are not following the right path.

If you have a virtual friend  (through the Internet) You have to be also aware of the different time zones because sometimes it’s not easy to meet with someone that wakes up when you just go to sleep

And by the way, be always honest about your real interests, for example…
Hi, I’m George, I would like to share with you a genuine friendship and by the way I’m also looking to improve my English speaking level

My Personal Experience, From Failure To Success

After some partnership failures, I thought about the whole thing and look for a partner that suits me best. After that, my English speaking partnerships are now more successful.
I’m currently working my speaking skills for half an hour almost five days a week with someone that is also learning English. Take a look at the four characteristic of my partnership…

Level My partner has a better level than me although he’s not a native English speaker.
Things in common We start our friendship sharing our interest in Urban legends.
Goals We both do want to improve our English speaking level.
Availability Although we live in different countries with different time zones  we try to met for 30 minutes almost every day.

And Remember…

How to really improve your English by choosing the…

You know that you need to read a lot to learn and improve your English. Reading helps you to learn vocabulary, and even better, not only single words but words in the context of sentences.
Moreover, when you read you are learning grammar without even noticing it.
But I guess that sometimes you have a problem…

Why Aren’t You Finishing The Books You Start Reading?

How to really improve your English by choosing the right books to read

Why do you think reading in English is boring or maybe too difficult for you?

This situation is very common among the English learners like us. The problem is that you don’t pick up the right book for you.

Here I share with you a basic strategy that is going to help you.

How To Choose The Right Book For You And Finish It?

Before choosing a new book to read, you have to answer 3 questions and make 1 commitment:

WHAT BOOK LEVEL?

WHAT BOOK LENGTH?

WHAT BOOK TOPIC?

+

WRITE DOWN YOUR PERSONAL COMMITMENT

Let’s see all this in detail:

1) What book level?

You have to be always aware of your current reading level. The book you choose has to be a little more difficult than your current level

A too difficult book means discouraging, not fun and going right ahead to failure.

A too easy book means that you are not going to improve as much as possible. You are not challenging yourself in the right way.

2) What book length?

You always have to ask yourself: How much time do I really have to read?

For example if you have a long vacation before you, you can maybe pick up a long book that is going to last for the whole holydays. You maybe have many free hours per day to read.

In the other hand, if because of your work, studies or family obligations  you don’t have much time to read, I recommend Short Stories, comics  or just articles because a long book is going to last for years and I bet that you are going to give up for sure.

Before choosing a new book you have to be able to visualize when you are going to finish it. If the answer to the question “When am I going to finish the book” is “I don’t know” then is not the right book for you, at least for now.

3) What  book topic?

Choose a topic that you really like or that has something to do with your job, hobbies…

If you have a basic level then avoid too much specialized books that required a more advanced level.

4) Your personal commitment

Here, you have to write down:

-How many pages are you going to read per day? (Approximately)

-When are you going to finish the book? (An exact date)

Then you have to commit to the number of pages and the date you write down.

Thanks to that you are going to motivate yourself. You can also check if you are fulfilling your commitment. Then you can be reassured that you are really following the right path to improve your English faster.

I Share With You How I Choose A Book

Here I show you a real example from one of the books that I read some time ago:

I asked myself the three basic questions…

What Level? I have a good reading level.
What length? I have a whole month vacation ahead and a lot of free time to read.
What topic? I like very much historical fiction novels.

I decided to pick up the book “The Pillars of the Earth” by “Ken Follett
Genre: Historical Fiction
Length: 1.075 pages long
Level:  For fluent readers

And I made a commitment…

My personal commitment I have to finish my book before the end of my vacations. The book is 1.075 pages long and I’m going to have 31 days to read it.If we do the math, I have to read 35 pages every day!

At the end the consequences of my effort…

The result At the end I didn’t finish the book during my holiday. I only read the book until page 984. I was able to finish the 91 pages left in the next two weeks when I was back to work!!!
I almost fulfill my commitment what I think is positive.

Every Time You Choose A New Book To Read Remember That…

How to really improve your English by choosing the right books to read_
-What do you thing about?
-What’s your strategy when choosing a book?
-Do you usually finish the books you start reading?
-What book are you currently reading or did you read in the past?
