The 5 best ways to learn and improve your…

As you know there is a lot of different methods to learn English.
In my opinion the next 5 ways are the best ones if you really want to improve your English.
They are maybe not available for you right now for personal reasons (your family responsibilities, your current job, money…) but still keep them always in mind.

You never know…

The 5 best ways to learn and improve your English

1. Go To Live In An English Speaking Country

It’s known all over the world. If you want to learn English then the best way is to go to live in an English speaking country. It’s a total immersion. You are going to be in contact with the English language and culture 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
You are going to work your ListeningReadingSpeaking and Writing skills all over the day without even noticing it!

2. Find An English Native Boyfriend Or Girlfriend

The person with whom you interact the most is always your boyfriend or girlfriend.
If you have and English native one then you are going to be in contact with the English language every day and in a very natural way.
It’s also a first-hand contact with the English culture.

3. Look For A Job Where You Have To Use Your English

Here I’m talking about a job where you use the English language most of the time. Not a job where you have to write an email in English once a week.
You are going to speak, listen, read or write in English nearly 8 hours per day.
I can’t assure you that your English is going to improve really fast!

4. Find A Group Of English Native Friends In Your City

If you can’t go to live in an English speaking country why don’t meet English native people in your own city?
Sometimes people from abroad come to work in your city. They maybe need help, a new friend or just someone to guide them through the city.
You can improve your English by hanging out with them on a regular basis.
You can give them back a nice friendship, your help and show them your country’s culture too.

5. Look For An English Native Virtual Friend

When none of the previous ways are available to you, you can still find a English native virtual partner on the Internet.
It’s going to be a “virtual” immersion but stil,l if you meet on a regular basis, be pretty sure that your English level is going to improve a lot.
The most difficult part here is to keep the friendship for a long time and to meet on a very regular basis.

How to work your English speaking skill everyday

In this post I want to share with you an easy exercise that can help you a lot to improve your English speaking skill.

When you talk to someone, most of the time you are just exchanging questions and answers.
When you are not used to talk in a language, it’s very difficult to build questions and answer in real time. You have to think too much before asking or answering and then the conversation doesn’t flow.

Then why not to train on your own “questions and answers” on a regular basis? That way in future conversations it’s going to be easier for you.

Work Your English Speaking Skill Everyday

Here is an idea on how you can improve your speaking…

You have to pick up a word (any word is good to do this exercise) and then for that chosen word you have to ask ALOUD  5 questions starting with the next words:

  • What…?
  • Where…?
  • When…?
  • Why…?
  • Who…?

And then you also have to answer ALOUD every question with a sentence (and not with a single word).

You can make up the questions and answers with real or invented sentences .It doesn’t matter at all. What really matters is that you have to try to build correct questions and answers.

If you do this exercise for a long period, the next day that you are going to talk with someone in English:

  • You are going to be able to ask and answer quickly.
  • The conversation is going to flow.
  • You are going to feel more confident and then you are going to do a real step ahead.

What I Recommend ?

I recommend you to do this training for a whole month and at least 4 words per day what represents:
4 words per day = 20 questions+ 20 answers per day.

And doing this for a whole month represents:
4 words per day during a whole month  =  600 questions + 600 answers per month.

Go figure that in a month you are going to ask and answer 600 questions!!! That’s good if you want to really improve!!!

I Show You A Practical Example:

I show you as an example the five words I choose on a given day: (“Funny“, “Blue“,  ”Knife”, ”Hope”).
I first picked up the word “Funny” and then I asked 5 questions using the word and I answered them like that:

What…?

  • Question: What is the funniest thing ever?
  • Answer: In my opinion The TV show “Two and a half men” is the funniest TV show ever.

Where…?

  • Question: Where can you find funny stuff?
  • Answer: I recommend you to check on the Internet for jokes.

When…?

  • Question: When can I watch a funny show?
  • Answer: You can watch funny TV shows every night in the HBO channel.

Why…?

  • Question: Why do you like funny things?
  • Answer: I like funny stuff because it helps to forget the daily problems that we have to deal with.

Who…?

  • Question: Who’s the funniest actor at the moment?
  • Answer: In my opinion Jon Cryer is the funniest artist I know.

Ant then I picked up my second word “Blue” and I did the same:

What…?

  • Question: What is your favorite color?
  • Answer: Actually my favorite color is blue.

Where…?

  • Question: Where can you find a blue car?
  • Answer: You just have to check on my parking lot. I own a blue car.

When…?

  • Question: When did you see a blue tomato for the first time?
  • Answer: Actually I have never seen a blue tomato.

Why…?

  • Question: Why is blue your favorite color?
  • Answer: Blue is my favorite color because I like the sky and the sea that are blue too.

Who…?

  • Question: Who is the guy in a blue t-shirt?
  • Answer: He’s john, my best friend. He always wears blue t-shirts

And then I did the same for the next 2 words that I picked up: ”Knife” and ”Hope“.

And Remember…

Improve your English faster through a good planning

You are working to improve your English but how can you make the most of your effort?
Sometimes you don’t improve your English as much as possible just because you don’t follow any strategy at all.

I think it’s crucial to follow a personal strategy to really improve your English. It’s also very improtant to check your progress every now and then to be sure that you are following the right path. Moreover it’s going to help you to be motivated.

Now you are thinking: Yes, that’s a great idea, but…How can you achieve that?

The Monthly Milestone Strategy

Improve your English faster through a good planning

I suggest you to follow an easy strategy that is going to help you to improve faster and to keep a record of what you are doing. This strategy is also going to boost your motivation.

From now on, follow these 3 easy steps EVERY month:

Step 1:
The first day of the month Milestone
  • Plan and write down your strategy for the whole month.
    • Which skills are you going to work?
      • Reading
      • Listening
      • Speaking
      • Writing

  • What specific tasks are you going to do for every skill?
  • Write down your commitment.
Step 2:
During the month
  • Work as planned on the first day of the month.
Step 3:
The last day of the month Milestone
  • You have to check the work you have done.
  • Draw your conclusions.

Let’s see all this in detail:

Tips for the first day of the month Milestone…

  • Be realistic on the effort/time you can spend during the month.
  • You can choose only 1 or 2 or 3 or even 4 skills to work during a month. It depends on your needs.
  • Be aware of the fact that the more skills you choose the less work you are going to do for each one.

Tips for the last day of the month Milestone…

  • If you feel it has been too easy to fulfill your commitment you can maybe plan more work for the next month.
  • If you hadn’t fulfill your tasks or it has been very difficult to fulfill them then you need to reduce the level of the work for the next month.
  • You have to feel that you are really working hard but without too much pressure.

Some good advices to keep always in mind:

  • Be realistic.
  • Try to adjust the tasks to what you can really do and try to always fulfill them.
  • Don’t avoid the tasks that you don’t like.
  • Work in the first place the skills where your level is worst.
  • Be patient during the first months using this strategy. Month after month is going to be easier for you.

A Practical Example Of The Monthly Milestone Strategy

Here I show you a personal example of the strategy I follow during a whole month some time ago…

Month: June 2012

First day of the month

Last day of the month

Skill

Tasks

Fulfillment

Listening  Watch 31 episodes of the TV Show “Two and a Half Men“. Half done…..I only watched 17 episodes.
Reading  Read 10 pages everyday of the book that I’m currently reading. (World Without End by Ken Follett) Done…..I read  at least 10 pages every day and even a lot more some days.
Speaking

Writing

Write an entry to my diary everyday.

Done…..I wrote an entry every day (Some days a longer entry some days a shorter one depending of what I have to tell).

Notes:

  • As you can see I decided to work only tree skills and left the speaking skill for another month.
  • I only choose one task per skill. (You can plan more than one task per skill.)

And Remenber…

Improve your English faster through a good planning_
-What do you think about this strategy?
-Are you going to try it?
-Don’t doubt to share with us your personal strategy for the next month.
