How to improve your English speaking level with an…

When talking, most of the time we just use basic questions and answers.
For us, learners, it’s difficult to ask and answer questions in real time because we are not used to do it.
How many times a tourist in the street asked you a very basic question in English and even though you could help him/her you feel blocked and didn’t know how to answer?
This is because you are not used to ask and answer questions in English.

What Do You Have To Do To Improve Your English Speaking Level

To overcome this situation you just have to work English questions and answers until you feel at ease and confident.

It’s Just like someone that wants to learn how to ride a bicycle.
You just have to ride and ride until you finally learn how to do it well.
It doesn’t matter if when you start riding the bicycle you are clumsy or don’t do it perfectly. Practice and practice makes perfect.
What only matter is what you are going to achieve. Don’t worry if you don’t do it perfectly the first times.

To improve your speaking level, the perfect and natural scenario would be to live in an English speaking country. In a total immersion, asking and answering questions all day long in common situations.

If you can’t go to live in an English speaking country, like most of us, you still can do a very easy exercise on a daily basis that is going to help you to improve your speaking level. Moreover you can do this exercise alone or with somebody else.

The Questions And Answers Marathon

What rules do you have to follow when doing this exercise?

What do you have to do?
– Ask and answer questions one after another without stopping.
– Do this exercise by speaking aloud or by writing down the questions and answers.

When do you have to do it?
– Do this exercise every day.
– Keep doing it for 5, 10, 15 or more intense minutes.

– It’s basic to build correct questions and answers.
– Always answer with a sentence and not with a single word.
– It doesn’t matter if what you ask and answer is true, has sense, is accurate…
– It also doesn’t matter if you make some mistakes. Just go ahead.
– Ask and answer about any topic. Change topics as needed.

With whom do you have to do it?
You can do this exercise:
– By yourself (One single learner)
– With a partner (Two learners)

        Hi Rose,

        I don’t forget you 😉

I hope that you are going to start again!

Work your English through things that you really like. Forget about English learning methods.
Before starting to learn English STOP and think twice about what are your goals. What do you like and don’t like about English.
Instead of thinking of what to do in order to improve your English, try to do things that you like using the English language.

        – Look for new friends –> Speaking English ones.
        – Read the books that you like –> in English.
        – Watch your favorite TV shows –> in English.
        – If you write a personal diary –> in English
        – If you want to start a new hobby –> Do it in English
        – If you are interested in a new topic in your life –> Go through it in English
        …And so on…

That way you are going to improve your English even without noticing it.

Feel free to ask for help or encouragement whenever you need it.
        Take care my friend!!!

Hi Rosa, I’m very happy to know that my blog is helping you.

You are right when you say that if you are not sure that your questions and answers are correct then it’s a problem.

This exercise is made for asking and answering questions with structures and tenses that you already know and can use easily and quickly.
It’s true that if you have a very basic level you first have to study how to ask and answer basic questions. You also have to know how to use the basic English tenses.
If you give me some weeks I’ll try to write a post to help you about how we build basic questions in the main English tenses.

In the other hand if you don’t feel confident I recommend you to write down your questions and answers and then check if they are right. You can also do this exercise with another person and then you can try to correct each other.
Keep in mind that this exercise is made to train structures that you already know.
If you have a good level you can ask and answer difficult questions without even checking them.
If you have a basic level you just ask and answer very basic questions and I recommend checking them until you feel confident.

      An easy example:
You use “What” and the “present simple” (You have to know how to use it)
      – What do I have? I have a lot of friends.
      – What do you like to do? I like to swim.
      – What does he love? He loves her girlfriend’s cookies.
      – What does she like to go? She likes to go to the cinema.
      – What do we have to do right now? We have to go to school.
      – What do they hate? They hate violence.
      …and so on…

I hope this explanation is going to help you.

Feel free to comment whenever you want!
Thank you very much for your comment 😉
