The most effective strategy to learn phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs are very important in the English language.
You do need to know lots of phrasal verbs if you want to reach a good English level.
But for English learners like us it’s difficult to learn phrasal verbs and use them naturally like native English people do…

The most effective strategy to learn phrasal verbs

Why Is So Difficult To Learn Phrasal Verbs

There are hundreds of phrasal verbs. To reach a good English level you have to learn at least the most common ones.
But the problem is that phrasal verbs are not an easy stuff to learn…

As an example, you know pretty well the meaning of the verb “to run”, but do you know what “to run out” means?

To run…I run five miles every morning.
To run out…I have to go to the food store because we ran out of sugar and milk.

As you can see, it’s not obvious to guess the meaning of “To run out” even if you know the meaning of the verb “to run”.

Summary: Phrasal verbs are so difficult because…

  1. There are lots of them.
  2. It’s often difficult to guess its meaning.
  3. One given phrasal verbs can have different meanings.
  4. Some phrasal verbs can be separated (I’ll call John back) while some other can’t (I run sugar out –> I run out of sugar).
  5. There are two words phrasal verbs (Give back), there are also three words phrasal verbs (Come up with).

Phrasal verbs are not easy to learn and moreover not easy to internalize and use in a natural way.

The Strategy I’m Using To Learn Phrasal Verbs

When I decided it was time to learn phrasal verbs, my first idea was to memorize from 3 to 5 news phrasal verbs every day.
After thinking twice about this strategy I thought it wasn’t the best one. It’s very difficult to memorize them because as you learn new ones you forget the older ones.
I thought of a way to internalize phrasal verbs by using them every day.

Let’s see the strategy in detail…

For 30 days in a row you are going to…

  1. Pick up a new phrasal verb every day.
  2. Check its meaning.
  3. Write a sentence using it
  4. Write a new sentence for all the phrasal verbs you learned the previous days.

That means that…

  • Day 1… You are going to write one sentence.
  • Day 2… You are going to write two sentence.
  • Day3… You are going to write three sentence.
  • …and so on… until…
  • Day 30… You are going to write thirty sentences!!!

After 30 days you can stop and then start again from day 1 with new phrasal verbs.

A Practical Example Of The Strategy

Day 1…

You Pick up a new phrasal verb To run out
You check its meaning To have none left or To exit rapidly.
You Write a sentence I ran out of gas and I had to leave my car in the side of the road and walk to the nearest gas station.

Day 2…

You pick up a new phrasal verb To get up
You check its meaning To rise in the morning from sleep or To stand.
You write a sentence I usually get up at 7 AM.
You write a new sentence for all the previous phrasal verbs you learnt When I saw the fire I ran out leaving behind all my belongings.

Day 3…

You pick up a new phrasal verb To keep away
You check its meaning To stay at a distance
You write a sentence Please keep the children away from the pool because they don’t know how to swim yet.
You write a new sentence for all the previous phrasal verbs you learnt  – Whenever I run out of milk I drink tea for breakfast. – Please get up from the sofa and help me because I’m not going to do all the household chores.

…And so on…until day 30.

How Are We Going To Learn Phrasal Verbs?

What am I going to do?

I will start using this strategy from today and for 30 days in a row.
If you want to follow my progression, I’m going to publish my daily work on phrasal verbs in a daily basis on:

What are you going to do?

You also have to start using this strategy right now.
You have to commit to work your phrasal verbs for 30 days in a row.
If after 30 days you feel that you are internalizing them, then start again from day 1 with new phrasal verbs.
Doing all this you are going to learn, and even more important, to use phrasal verbs in a natural way.

The best tool to improve your English writing skill

For us, English learner, it’s often difficult to improve our English writing level because we don’t write on a regular basis.
It’s difficult to write regularly when you don’t have the obligation to do so because , for example, of your job.

In one hand, it’s easy to improve your writing skill when you have to write in English every day.

In the other hand, when writing is not among your daily chores, I bet that you don’t write very often and when trying to write something you fight a lot because you don’t even know what to write about .
That’s the reason that you tend to “forget” to work the writing skill.

Let’s see what you have to do in order to change this situation…

Why Is So Hard To Improve Your English Writing Skill?

Many times in the past I decided that it was time for me to write in English everyday because I wanted to improve my writing skill.
The problem was that after writing for some days in a row, I always gave up because I didn’t know what to write about anymore.

One day talking to a good friend of mine, she told me that she had been writing her own diary since she was a child, for more than 12 years!!!!
Then came to me the revelation!!!

I decided to start writing my personal diary but just in English (instead of my native tongue) in order to really improve my English writing level.

Write Your Diary To Improve Your English Writing Skill

Writing a personal diary is one of the best options if you want to really improve your English writing skill.

The advantages are:

  1. You write an entry EVERYDAY (7 days a week without excuses).
  2. You can write more or less depending of your free time, inspiration or mood.
  3. You can write about anything you like (Daily experiences, thoughts…).
  4. While writing your diary your are also keeping a record of the work done.
  5. You can check your progression looking back at what you wrote in the past.
  6. If one day you don’t know what to write about, just write about what you did during the day (Because you always do something, don’t you?).

It’s easy to create the habit to write when you keep a personal diary.
Try to write at the same time everyday. For example…

  • Just before going to sleep.
  • Just after waking up.
  • During your lunch time.
  • While in the bus.
  • …among many others…

What Kind Of Diary To Choose?

In my personal opinion I prefer to write through a keyboard than with a pen, and then I prefer a digital diary than a paper diary.
But it really don’t mind at all what kind of diary you are going to use.
There is beautiful paper journals for those who like to write in the old style.
Or very useful digital diaries with a lot of fancy features for those that are more on the technology side.
Just take the one that fits you best.

A good habit that is going to help to…

There are things that don’t help you at all when learning English.

In one hand, we humans tend to be lazy by nature.
In the other hand we are always busy doing our daily tasks and obligations.
Because of these, among many other things, your English improvement finds a lot of difficulties before you reach a good level.

But luckily there are daily habits that can help you to improve your English faster…

A good habit that is going to help to improve your English

Let’s See If It Rings A Bell…

While doing a daily task, a doubt or idea about English come across your mind. Since you are busy doing something else you don’t take the time to write down your doubt or idea to check it later.
Sometime after you just don’t remember anymore what was your idea or question about.
Then you just lose a great chance to improve your English.

This same situation happening one time after another means losing a lot of good opportunities to learn English.

What Did I Do In Order To Improve My English

The previous situation happened to me a lot of times. I lost good ideas or interesting doubts about English because when they came to my mind, I was busy doing something else and didn’t take the time to write them down.

To stop this situation I started to use a notebook that I kept with me all the time. I wrote down anything that came into my mind and that I would check later when not busy anymore.

Afterwards, at nights, on weekends or just when I had some free time I used to look at my notebook and then I calmly checked all my doubts and ideas and worked them.
Sometime after, I even changed my notebook and pencil for a voice recording app in my cell phone that I still use nowadays.

This strategy can seem trivial to you or just not really necessary. But without using it I can assure you that you are losing a lot of great opportunities to improve your English.

How Can You Help To Improve Your English

I suggest you to give a chance to this strategy for a certain time and then decide by yourself if it’s really useful or not.
I bet that you are going to be surprised about how many opportunities you lost in the past to improve your English.

  • Try to have with you all the time a notebook or a recording device like your cell phone, Mp3 player, tablet…
  • You just have to gather all your doubts, questions and ideas in your notebook or recording device.
  • Then check them whenever you like or are able to:
    • Every night.
    • Once a week.
    • On weekends.
    • Whenever you have some free time.

Important note: Always try to write or record your ideas or doubts clearly and enough extensively. If not when you are going to check them later, it’s going to be impossible to understand what the hell did you write down or record in a rush.

And Remember…
