How to work your English speaking skill everyday

In this post I want to share with you an easy exercise that can help you a lot to improve your English speaking skill.

When you talk to someone, most of the time you are just exchanging questions and answers.
When you are not used to talk in a language, it’s very difficult to build questions and answer in real time. You have to think too much before asking or answering and then the conversation doesn’t flow.

Then why not to train on your own “questions and answers” on a regular basis? That way in future conversations it’s going to be easier for you.

Work Your English Speaking Skill Everyday

Here is an idea on how you can improve your speaking…

You have to pick up a word (any word is good to do this exercise) and then for that chosen word you have to ask ALOUD  5 questions starting with the next words:

  • What…?
  • Where…?
  • When…?
  • Why…?
  • Who…?

And then you also have to answer ALOUD every question with a sentence (and not with a single word).

You can make up the questions and answers with real or invented sentences .It doesn’t matter at all. What really matters is that you have to try to build correct questions and answers.

If you do this exercise for a long period, the next day that you are going to talk with someone in English:

  • You are going to be able to ask and answer quickly.
  • The conversation is going to flow.
  • You are going to feel more confident and then you are going to do a real step ahead.

What I Recommend ?

I recommend you to do this training for a whole month and at least 4 words per day what represents:
4 words per day = 20 questions+ 20 answers per day.

And doing this for a whole month represents:
4 words per day during a whole month  =  600 questions + 600 answers per month.

Go figure that in a month you are going to ask and answer 600 questions!!! That’s good if you want to really improve!!!

I Show You A Practical Example:

I show you as an example the five words I choose on a given day: (“Funny“, “Blue“,  ”Knife”, ”Hope”).
I first picked up the word “Funny” and then I asked 5 questions using the word and I answered them like that:

What…?

  • Question: What is the funniest thing ever?
  • Answer: In my opinion The TV show “Two and a half men” is the funniest TV show ever.

Where…?

  • Question: Where can you find funny stuff?
  • Answer: I recommend you to check on the Internet for jokes.

When…?

  • Question: When can I watch a funny show?
  • Answer: You can watch funny TV shows every night in the HBO channel.

Why…?

  • Question: Why do you like funny things?
  • Answer: I like funny stuff because it helps to forget the daily problems that we have to deal with.

Who…?

  • Question: Who’s the funniest actor at the moment?
  • Answer: In my opinion Jon Cryer is the funniest artist I know.

Ant then I picked up my second word “Blue” and I did the same:

What…?

  • Question: What is your favorite color?
  • Answer: Actually my favorite color is blue.

Where…?

  • Question: Where can you find a blue car?
  • Answer: You just have to check on my parking lot. I own a blue car.

When…?

  • Question: When did you see a blue tomato for the first time?
  • Answer: Actually I have never seen a blue tomato.

Why…?

  • Question: Why is blue your favorite color?
  • Answer: Blue is my favorite color because I like the sky and the sea that are blue too.

Who…?

  • Question: Who is the guy in a blue t-shirt?
  • Answer: He’s john, my best friend. He always wears blue t-shirts

And then I did the same for the next 2 words that I picked up: ”Knife” and ”Hope“.

And Remember…

How to improve your English speaking level even when…

Speaking is maybe the most important skill to master when you learn a language but why most people struggle so much to improve their speaking?

When you are not living in an English speaking country it’s not very easy to find opportunities to speak in English and then to improve. Then maybe you have to create this opportunities by yourself…

How to improve your English speaking level even when you are alone

Why Your English Speaking Level Is Not Improving?

I want to tell you one of the BIG mistakes I made for a very long time while learning English: My speaking level didn’t improve because I just didn’t speak in English at all.

If you want to learn to drive a car you just have to drive. You are not going to improve your driving skill just by only watching cars passing by.

Then how do you want to improve your English speaking level if you don’t often give you the opportunity to speak in English?

There is a magic word that can help you a lot to improve your speaking…

Aloud Is The Magic Word To Improve Your Speaking Skill Faster

I bet that sometimes you feel that your mouth and tongue struggle too much when you have to speak in English.

Here is a very easy strategy that is going to help you to improve :

Speak ALOUD as often as possible when you are alone.

  • Whenever you read, do it ALOUD.
  • Whenever you just finish writing something, read it ALOUD.
  • Try to sing songs ALOUD
  • Talk ALOUD while driving, doing the dishes, walking, having a shower…
  • Try to think in English ALOUD instead of in your native language (That is not easy if you have a basic level)

Force yourself to speak ALOUD in English every day and as much as possible. At first you can feel awkward or stupid, but keep doing it and you are going to improve for sure!!!

Seem quite obvious but think about it for a minute…
…are you speaking ALOUD as much as you should?

The most valuable thing to improve your English speaking…

For English learners that aren’t living in an English speaking country, Speaking is not easy to improve.
Because of that I bet that like me you think that Speaking is maybe the most difficult skill to learn.
To improve, we need to speak in a regular basis and it’s hard to find situations where you can practice your English speaking.

Then it’s when we really need something…

the most valuable thing to improve your English speaking level

Someone You Need To Improve Your Speaking

If you can’t go to live in an English speaking country for some time, then what you need is…wait for it…

A REGULAR PARTNER

A regular partner is someone with whom you are going to improve your speaking level.
In my personal experience it’s not easy to find the right partner because:

-You don’t know where to find it.
-When you find someone you don’t have anything in common.
– When you finally find someone nice, the partner doesn’t show any more after some meetings or maybe it’s you that give up.

Then how can you find a suitable partner?  What do you have to check?

The Four Characteristics Of A Good Partner

  1. Level
  2. Things in common
  3. Goals
  4. Availability

1) Level

We all want a native speaker to help us to improve our speaking. Sometimes when your speaking level is very basic is not easy to maintain a conversation and then it’s impossible to keep our native partner interested.
Then it’s not a bad idea to work with a non native speaker like us.
Whenever possible someone with a better level than you is going to be a good motivation and a good teacher too.
Someone as motivated as you to improve his/her speaking is also a very good choice.

2) Things in common

It’s not only just about speaking, it’s about enjoying the process of learning. If you share things in common with your partner (Topics, Hobbies…) it’s going to be easier. You are going to share common interest and then the partnership is going to last for long.
Sharing common interest = Long-lasting partner = Improve your speaking faster

3) Goals

Have in mind your goals:
-Reach a good speaking level soon?
-Enjoying a friendship and by the way improve a little your speaking?

You have to know your goals and the ones of your partner.
You maybe need a partner as motivated as yourself to meet almost every day. Or maybe you just need a friend to meet every now and then without any hurry?
It’s important to share with your partner the same objectives.

4) Availability

Be aware of your availability and the one of your partner. You need a long term friendship to improve your speaking and if you can’t meet on a regular basis then you are not following the right path.

If you have a virtual friend  (through the Internet) You have to be also aware of the different time zones because sometimes it’s not easy to meet with someone that wakes up when you just go to sleep

And by the way, be always honest about your real interests, for example…
Hi, I’m George, I would like to share with you a genuine friendship and by the way I’m also looking to improve my English speaking level

My Personal Experience, From Failure To Success

After some partnership failures, I thought about the whole thing and look for a partner that suits me best. After that, my English speaking partnerships are now more successful.
I’m currently working my speaking skills for half an hour almost five days a week with someone that is also learning English. Take a look at the four characteristic of my partnership…

Level My partner has a better level than me although he’s not a native English speaker.
Things in common We start our friendship sharing our interest in Urban legends.
Goals We both do want to improve our English speaking level.
Availability Although we live in different countries with different time zones  we try to met for 30 minutes almost every day.

And Remember…
