The key to your learning English success

I bet that you often work your English without any direction or prior thinking.

Ask yourself the next questions…

  • The work you are currently doing is really helping to improve your English?
  • Are there better strategies to reach your English goals faster?
  • Are you checking if your English skills levels are improving?

In the past I used to work my English without any direction. As a result I worked a lot and get very little results in return.

Let’s look at an easy strategy to increase your learning English success

Your Learning English Success In 4 Basic Steps

How to assure your learning English success

I’m going to show you 4 basics steps that you can follow in order to make the most of your work.
Your main goal is to improve as much as possible your English with less work from your part.

Let’s take a look at the 4 steps…

  1. Define your Goal
Before starting to work you need to clearly know what do you want to achieve.
As an example, a specific and clear goal would be:
I want to improve my English vocabulary in the field where I work.”
Avoid too generic goals like “I want to read in English”
  2. Plan a strategy
When you know your goal, before starting to work, it’s time to plan a specific strategy in order to reach it.
As an example, If you work on marketing and want to improve your vocabulary on this field you are going to read articles or podcasts about marketing.
  3. Work Towards your goal
While studying never forget your goal in order to work in the most efficient direction.
  4. Check your progression
When the work you planned is done or whenever you feel it, you have to check if what you are doing is helping you.
If you reach your goal or feel that you are improving…You are in the right direction!
If you are not improving, go back to step 2 and reconsider your strategy.
Never give up because when you make a mistake you are just a step closer to your goal. You only fail when you do nothing at all.

A Personal Example Of How I Use This Strategy

Step 1: I define my goal
I want to improve my English speaking skill which is by far my weakest level.
I have to concentrate on reducing my accent and improving my pronunciation of lots of words that I don’t even know how to pronounce.

Step 2: I plan my strategy
I’m going to concentrate on two main focuses in order to reach my goal:

  1. I need to know how I can reduce my accent while talking in English. I also want to learn some basic pronunciation rules. I’m going to look for materials that can help me.
  2. If I want to improve my speaking I do have to speak in English on a regular basis. Then I’m going to talk almost daily with my English friends in order to practice what I’m learning about accent reduction and pronunciation.

Step 3 : I work
I’m currently working on what I planned.
I’m listening and watching accent reduction and English pronunciation materials.
I’m speaking in English on a regular basis.

Step 4: I check my progression
I’m checking my work every now and then to make sure that I’m on the right path.
Of course my English accent and pronunciation is not going to improve overnight.
But I think it’s wise to check for new materials whenever I fell I’m not improving anymore.

And Remember…

I share with you an infographic that is going to help you to visualize the whole process in order to assure your learning English success!

What Are The New Year’s Resolutions?

As you maybe already know New Year’s resolutions are promises that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year. What about to prioritize your English in your 2014 resolutions?

You can use this “special” moment to stop and think about your English improvement:

  • How did you do during the past year in order to learn English?
  • What are you going to do this New Year to improve your English?

Think deeply about these 2 questions and then you have to:

  1. Put in the ground a very big milestone in the first day of the year to know:
    • What are the goals you want to achieve by the end of 2014?
    • What strategies are you going to follow in order to reach your goals by the end of the year?
  2. In the last day of the year you are also going to stick another big milestone because  it’s when you are going to check and evaluate your work during the year to evaluate if you really reached your goals!

How To Write Down Your Enlgish New Year’s Resolutions

If you want to succed when choosing your resolutions you have to avoid resolutions that are too general or abstract like for example:
I’m going to do a lot of work to improve my English.

You have to write down specific and clear goals that you can easily visualize like:
I’m going to improve my reading skill by reading a book per month (12 books total).
I’m also going to work my writing skill by writing an entry in my personal diary everyday (365 entries total).

Be aware that you have to commit to work hard during the year in order to reach your resolutions.
It’s very easy to give up or to postpone your work because the end of a new year always seems to be so far…

My Personal New Year’s Resolutions For 2014

I have been thinking deeply about what are going to be my New Year’s Resolutions In order to improve my English.
After analyzing this past year I think that I’m going to have to clear goals that I want to reach by the end of the year.

Apart from writing down my two 2014 resolutions I also commit to work as much as possible to reach them or at the least to almost reach them by the end of the year.

Then…Let’s write down my 2014 English resolutions…

My first New Year’s Resolution…

I want to focus on improving my English speaking level that I have neglected for too much time.
I specially want to improve my pronunciation and my accent that nowadays really suck.

In order to reach my goal:
– I’ll speak with my English speaking friends at least for half an hour per day.
– I’ll also look for materials that can help me to improve my speaking skill.

…George

My second New Year’s Resolution…

I’m aware that my second resolution is pretty ambitious and difficult…
I’m going to prepare for the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) during 2014.
I’ll take my exam during the first weeks of 2015.

In order to reach my goal:
– I’m going to plan a specific strategy to work the different sections of the exam.
– I’ll have to work on a very regular basis in order to reach the skill levels expected on the exam.

I know beforehand that this exam is difficult because you need to have a very good level of English.
…Nevertheless, I will try!

…George

Something that can help you to learn English faster

It’s basic to learn English through things that you really like and enjoy. Don’t waste your precious time with boring materials that don’t interest you.

When you are working through something that you like:

  • You enjoy while working.
  • Time seems to go by faster.
  • You improve a lot more because of your positive mindset towards what you do.
  • You want to keep working your English whenever possible.

I’m pretty sure that you agree with me. Being that said…

What Do You Have To Do To Learn English Faster

Something that can help you to learn English faster
From now on whenever you find SOMETHING that you really enjoy, you have to use it as much as possible to work your English with.

It’s like a little baby that plays and plays with his favorite toy until it breaks into pieces.

Your favorite toy is going to be a thing that you like very much and that you use it in order to improve your English.

Let’s see how to do that…

What Thing Can You Use To Learn English Faster

There are very particular and personal things that can help you a lot.

Your “Thing” to work your English through can be something that you…

  • Like
  • Enjoy
  • Are interest in
  • Are really curious about

Your “Thing” can be as an example a…

  • Book
  • Film
  • TV show
  • Topic you like
  • Hobby
  • Interest you have
  • Idea in your mind   (start a business, learn to play guitar)

How To Work With Your “Thing”

When you have your “Thing”, it’s time to work around it as much as possible.

Focus all your work around this thing that you like so much and work and improve your English around it.

You are going to work your Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing  skills around your thing.

As A Personal Example Of This Strategy

As an example, I really enjoyed reading the book The Da Vinci Code By Dan Brown.
A lot of people like it, a lot of people dislike it. Long story short: It’s a very entertaining book full of suspense.

As I liked a lot the book, I decided to go further around this material.

1. I then looked around and found a documentary in DVD about what was right and wrong inside “The Da Vinci code”. I watched the DVD many times, first with subtitles then without them.

2. Then I also looked for articles in the Internet about some topics inside the book. that I found very interesting.

3. After that I decided to listen to the The Da Vinci Code Audiobook. It was like reading the book twice, but this second time with my ears.
As it was the second time reading the book, it was pretty easy for me to follow what I was listening to.

4. I also looked for forums and groups in the Internet about the book and talk with other people that also liked or disliked the book.

5. I even end up with a new friend with whom we talk long hours about the book and then about a lot of different topics outside the book.

As a brief summary of all my work around the book I read:

Material

Skill that I worked

Book

Reading

DVD Documentary

Listening  /Reading

Audiobook

Listening

Articles in the Internet

Reading

Videos in Youtube

Listening /Reading

Forums and groups in the Internet

Reading / Writing

Virtual friend in the Internet

Reading / Writing /Listening / Speaking

As you can see you can do a lot of work around something that you really like.

Use This Same Strategy With Anything That You Like

For example if you are looking to start a new business then focus all the work to do in English:

  • Read books about the business.
  • Look for advice in the Internet.
  • Look for articles on blogs.
  • Watch videos in Youtube.
  • Talk to forums, groups and people in the sector.
  • And so on…but do all of these using the English language.

And Remember…

Something that can help you to learn English faster_
-What is your “thing”?
-What are you planning to improve your English through your “thing”?
-All you comments are very welcome!!!
